Maximum Sanitation

By Art Martin, Inventor, Scientist, Expert in Airborne Pathogens

Maximum Sanitization Is Vital To Combat COVID-19 And Future Similar Threats

BLUFFTON, U.S.A 3rd February 2020

The novel corona virus, now named COVID-19, originated in Wuhan – a central Chinese city of 11 million people. It was first reported on 31 December 2019. Just 30 days later, on 30th January, World Health Organization, declared this contagion an international emergency and urged global co-ordination to tackle its spread.

This contagion which is classified as Zoonotic, seems to have originated in a seafood and meat market in Wuhan and most likely jumped to humans from bats.

Human to Human Transmission

As airlines suspend flights, countries evacuate citizens from China and nearly 60 million Chinese experience a lockdown, this outbreak remains a clear and present danger to the global health and economy as “human to human” transmission is now documented. This outbreak has “gone viral” - the speed of contagion probably more rapid than the SARS outbreak in 2003.

The 2019-nCoV virus has spread now to Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Australia, Cambodia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, India, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Thailand, The Republic of Korea, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam and even here, in the United States.

As of Thursday, January 30, 6:00 AM EST when the WHO declared it a global health emergency, Chinese authorities reported nearly 8,000 infected and 170 dead, with the rest of the world reporting more than 110 confirmed cases. At the point of this release, these grim numbers sadly mount.

More Deadly To Elderly

Just as with other corona viruses (including the common cold, SARS, H1N1 and MERS), the 2019-nCoV (often referred to as the “Wuhan virus”) causes respiratory illness. However, this newly mutated strain is far more virulent – killing about 3% of those infected. The death rates are far higher in those above the age of 60 and with concomitant medical conditions.

Combating the spread of such viruses must be done rapidly in a manner in which the disinfectants and infection control process themselves do not harm humans and/or pets.

Based on more than 30 years of our work in infection control, there is need to both personal and communal effort in containing this outbreak and more importantly, preventing future outbreaks in our increasingly connected world.

Virus Exposure And Our Anatomy

Before that, we need to understand the virus better and it’s mode of entry into the human body. Indeed, the virus has only 3 ways to enter the body:

-The eyes

-The nose

-The mouth

The mouth is a challenge to microbes due to the protective effects of salivary enzymes. Should the virus somehow get past the mouth, the highly acid environment in the stomach will completely destroy all virus based proteins.

The eyes produce tears that have specific enzymes that disable proteins on the surfaces of viruses. More importantly, whatever survives the nose, ports back to the nose.

The Weakest Link – The Nose

As such, the nose is the easiest point of entry. It is warm, damp and dark as well rich in fatty and amino acids – “a perfect storm” for rapid viral replication.

The nasal passage opens directly into the sinuses, the throat and of course, the lungs.

Hand To Mouth Transmission

While you are never going to stand in the face of someone who is sick and sneezing, you are still likely go shake his hands or touch a door knob touched by her. You are then very likely to touch your nose transmitting the virus in the “Achilles heel” of your entire immune system – your nose.

In fact, we learned a powerful lesson in the 2003 SARS outbreak when almost everyone in a particular floor of a Hong Kong apartment was afflicted with more than half of them succumbing. Shocked researchers traced this to someone who visited a SARS patient in a hospital. Having picked up the virus, possibly via a handshake, he pushed the button of the floor number on the elevator lift panel. Everyone else in that floor touched the button in the process, infecting themselves and their loved ones.

While masks offer some protection, keeping the hand clean and way from the nose is far more important. Sanitization and frequent hand washing is key.

All Natural Sanitization

Over the years, my team and I have developed an entirely plant based proprietary blend that we have tested in Biosafety laboratories, some reporting to WHO, all over the world to kill 170 different disease causing agents including all forms of viruses who’s symptoms manifest as those of the Corona family. We have begun testing this disinfectant on the Wuhan virus in conjunction with our Chinese partners.

The plant-based active substance works by attaching to the virus and weakening the cell walls. It inhibits its ability to take up amino acids – the basic building block of cells – and forces the virus cells to clump together, in the process killing themselves, almost instantly. The potent compound is environmentally safe with very low toxicity. Hence, it is not harmful to humans and pets even if accidentally swallowed. It is free of alcohol and other potentially toxic chemicals.

Approvals And Testing

We named this proprietary formula Path-Away®. It is all natural, alcohol and GMO free. It is safe if swallowed and may be used by all age groups in all stages of life. It is also safe for pets. The ingredients of Path-Away® are GRAS certified and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is exempted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It is listed in the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and has undergone successful USP-51 testing as a disinfectant.

It is also been approved by the Food and Safety Authority and Environmental Protection Authority of New Zealand as a “rinse free” sanitizer as is completely natural. It is approved for use by Malaysia's Ministry of Health, with special reference to the H1N1 virus – another corona type virus which caused between151,700 and 575,400 deaths worldwide according the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

We had previously assisted the Singapore Government during the SARS outbreak in 2003 and assisted Malaysia during the H1N1 outbreak in 2009. In both instances Path-Away® was deployed.

Nasal Sanitation

Since Path-Away® is a non-irritant, it can be safely be deployed around and in the nose. We already have a nasal spray that we call Flight Relief for travelers but can be used by anyone.

More importantly, we are co-developing a unique 8 hour acting nasal balm with Holista Colltech – a publicly traded Australian company (ASX: HCT) which we will be filing global patent sometime before June this year. We firmly believe that a long lasting balm can effectively function as a nasal shield. It would be far more consistent, convenient and cost efficient that a face mask.

Holista has a long working relationship with our group and already sells Path-Away® as a held spray sanitizer called NatShield™ exclusively in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Australia and New Zealand.

While this global outbreak has sparked intense media attention, we need to be mindful that viruses and similar disease-causing microbes have been with us from the beginning of time. In fact, the last 4 month winter season resulted in some 15 million cases of flu and some 8,200 deaths. Similar numbers bear out in the Southern Hemisphere.

Bill Gates in his TED Talk in April 2015 said that the next calamity that “kills 10 million people will not be a missile but a microbe”. The World Bank estimates that that event could negatively impact the Global GDP by whopping negative 3 trillion dollars.

Clearly, we need to be better prepared and armed.
