The hospital is also known for its cultural and artistic contributions, such as the WPA murals and the Hip-Hop Public Health Education Center. One of the most notable events in the hospital's history was when it saved the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1958 after he was stabbed in the chest by a mentally ill woman at a book signing on 125th Street. The hospital's chief of surgery, Dr. Aubrey Maynard, performed a complex and innovative procedure to remove the blade from King's chest without damaging his heart or lungs. The hospital has continued to provide outstanding care to all New Yorkers, especially those who are underserved and marginalized. Harlem Hospital Trauma Center is one of the busiest and most respected trauma centers in the city.
