MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

A condition affecting the nervous system.

 

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a degenerative disease of unknown cause, affecting the brain and spinal cord.

 

Onset is between the ages of 20 and 40 years of age and is more common is females.

 

MS is characterized by a loss in both motor and sensory function as the lipoprotein content of nerve cells is lost, leading to the formation of areas of demyelination referred to as plaques.

 

Symptoms depend on the size and distribution of plaques.

 

SYMPTOMS OF MS MAY INCLUDE:


• visual disturbances
• pins and needles
• numbness
• fatigue
• loss of mobility and muscle coordination
• spasticity and,
• increases in body temperature
