DIABETES MELLITUS

A Condition affecting the endocrine, circulatory and nervous systems.

There are two main types of this metabolic disorder, characterized by a lack of or inadequate secretion of insulin, or altered sensitivity of receptor cells to the presence of insulin:

•Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM)) and,
•Type 2 DM (adult onset or non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM)).

WHEN UNCONTROLLED, SYMPTOMS MAY INCLUDE:

• polyuria (frequent, excessive urination),
• polydipsia (excessive thirst) and,
• hyperglycemia (high blood glucose)

Such clients are at risk of developing loss of vision, infections, and kidney problems and experiencing poor wound healing.
