90-90 STRAIGHT

LEG RAISE TEST

• Test positioning

The client lies supine, stabilizing both hips at 90 degrees of flexion with both hands.

The knees are bent in a relaxed position.

The therapist stands next to the client.

• Action

The client is instructed to actively extend one knee at a time as much as possible.

The test is performed bilaterally.

• Positive finding

If the knee is flexed greater than 20-degrees, the hamstrings are considered tight.

• Special considerations & comments

When assessing this test, care should always be taken to be consistent with the position of the pelvis so that testing measures can be repeated with reliability.

The 90-90 Straight Leg Raise Test is based on principles from Dr. James Cyriax’s work in orthopedic medicine and Dr. Robert Elvey’s contributions to neural tension assessment, particularly for hamstring tightness and lumbar spine disorders.
