COMPRESSION
TEST
• Test positioning
The client may sit or stand with the affected finger extended.
The therapist stands in front of the client.
• Action
The therapist holds the distal phalanx and applies compression along the long axis of the bone of the finger being tested.
• Positive finding
Pain at the site of injury indicates a fracture.
• Special considerations & comments
This test should not be performed if there is an obvious deformity.
The Compression Test is based on the foundational work of Dr. James Cyriax in orthopedic medicine, with contributions from Dr. John C. Kennedy in understanding joint function and pathology, particularly in the context of wrist and hand assessments.
