INTERDIGITAL
NEUROMA TEST
• Test positioning
The client sits on the examining table with the involved leg extended.
The therapist stands next to the involved foot and places one hand around the metatarsal heads.
• Action
The therapist squeezes the client's metatarsal heads together and holds for 1 to 2 minutes.
• Positive finding
Pain tingling, or numbness in the foot toes, or ankle is indicative of an interdigital neuroma.
If positive, the pain is usually relieved when pressure is released.
• Special considerations & comments
Pain between the metatarsal heads is indicative of Morton's neuroma.
The most common location is between the third and fourth metatarsal heads.
The Interdigital Neuroma Test is attributed to Dr. James Cyriax, used to diagnose Morton’s neuroma, with compression between the metatarsal heads replicating symptoms of the condition.
