NOBLE
TEST
• Test positioning
The client lies supine with the knee flexed up to 90-degrees.
The therapist stands on the involved side and places the thumb over the lateral epicondyle of the involved knee.
The other hand is placed around the client's ankle.
• Action
The therapist passively flexes and extends the client's knee while maintaining pressure over the lateral epicondyle.
• Positive finding
If pain is present under the therapist's thumb when the client's knee is positioned in 30-degrees of flexion, Illotibial Band (ITB) friction syndrome is indicated.
• Special considerations & comments
At 30-degrees of knee flexion, the ITB lies directly over the lateral epicondyle.
This is a passive, non-weight-bearing version of the Renne test.
The Noble Test is credited to Dr. Clive Noble for his work on iliotibial band friction syndrome.
Contributions from Dr. James Cyriax’s manual therapy techniques have further refined its diagnostic application in knee pathology.
