RENNE
TEST
• Test positioning
The client stands.
The therapist stands in front of the client and places the thumb over the lateral epicondyle of the involved knee.
• Action
The client is instructed to support the body weight on the involved foot and actively flex the knee as if performing a squat.
The therapist maintains pressure with the thumb over the lateral epicondyle.
• Positive finding
If pain is present under the therapist's thumb when the client's knee is positioned in 30-degrees of flexion, iliotibial band (ITB) friction syndrome is indicated.
• Special considerations & comments
At 30-degrees of knee flexion, the ITB lies directly over the lateral epicondyle.
This is an active weight bearing version of the Noble test.
The Renne Test is credited to Dr. R. Renne for his work on iliotibial band friction syndrome and its relation to knee pain.
Dr. James Cyriax’s work in manual therapy has further influenced the diagnostic approach of this test.
