SUBOCCIPITALS
TRIGGER POINT(S)
• Location
Trigger points in the suboccipital muscles are typically located at the base of the skull, just below the occipital bone.
These trigger points can be found bilaterally along the muscle attachments to the occiput
and the upper cervical vertebrae (C1 and C2).
• Pain Referral Pattern
Pain typically refers to the back of the head, the base of the skull, and sometimes behind the eyes.
It can cause aching, burning, or sharp pain in these areas, and may contribute to headaches, neck pain, and restricted neck movement.
• Potential Causes
▫ Poor posture, especially forward head posture.
▫ Prolonged periods of sitting, especially in front of a computer or with the head in a flexed position.
▫ Stress and tension in the neck and upper back muscles.
▫ Trauma or injury to the neck or head area.
▫ Repetitive activities that strain the neck muscles.
• Prevention Tips
▫ Practice good ergonomics and maintain proper posture, especially when sitting for long periods.
▫ Take regular breaks to stretch and move the neck and upper back muscles.
▫ Incorporate stress-reduction techniques such as relaxation exercises and mindfulness.
▫ Perform regular neck and upper back strengthening and stretching exercises.
▫ Ensure proper sleeping posture and use a supportive pillow.
