Trigger Points that Refer Pain to the Pelvis, Sacrum and Gluteal Region

Pain Referred to the Coccyx and Tailbone Area

 

 

Gluteus Maximus (Lower Fibers):

Aching pain near the coccyx and surrounding area.

 

 

Coccygeus:

Sharp or aching pain in the coccyx area, aggravated by sitting.

 

 

Levator Ani (Pubococcygeus, Iliococcygeus):

Deep pain referred to the coccyx and rectal area, can feel internal.

 

 

Piriformis:

Occasionally radiates pain downward to involve the coccyx.

Pain Referred to the Buttock (Gluteal Region)

 

 

Gluteus Maximus (All Fibers):

Generalized deep aching pain throughout the buttock.

 

 

Gluteus Medius (All Fibers):

Referred pain deep into the upper buttock and sometimes toward the hip.

 

 

Gluteus Minimus (All Fibers):

Referred pain deep into the buttock and sometimes down the posterior thigh.

 

 

Piriformis:

Sharp or burning pain in the center of the buttock; can mimic sciatica symptoms.

 

 

Tensor Fasciae Latae:

Referral to the upper lateral buttock, sometimes wrapping toward the hip.

 

 

Obturator Internus and Externus:

Deep pain inside the buttock, often mistaken for hip joint pain.

 

 

Gemelli (Superior and Inferior):

Localized deep aching in the mid-buttock area.

 

 

Quadratus Femoris:

Deep buttock pain extending toward the hip and sometimes into the posterior thigh.

Pain Referred to the Hip and Lateral Pelvis

 

 

Gluteus Medius (Anterior and Middle Fibers):

Strong pain around the lateral pelvis and greater trochanter.

 

 

Gluteus Minimus (Anterior Fibers):

Pain at the hip and lateral thigh, sometimes mimicking hip joint pain.

 

 

Tensor Fasciae Latae:

Pain in the lateral pelvis and hip area.
