CRANK TEST

• Test positioning

With the client standing, the therapist places the distal hand on the client's elbow and the proximal hand on the client's proximal humerus and then passively elevates the client's shoulder to 160-degrees in the scapular plane.

• Action

With the distal hand, the therapist applies a load along the long axis of the humerus while the proximal hand externally and internally rotates the humerus.

• Positive finding

Pain and/or clicking are indicative of glenoid labral pathology.

• Special considerations & comments

This test can also be performed in the supine position should apprehension or muscle guarding be a concern in the standing position.

Like most tests for labral pathology, the sensitivity of this test is questionable.
