POPLITEAL

FOSSA

• Location

A diamond-shaped site found on the posterior side of the knee.

Bordered by the distal hamstrings and proximal gastrocnemius.

• Description

The fossa (depression or hollow) is a relatively unprotected area containing these structures:

- Popliteal artery,

- Popliteal vein, and

- Tibial nerve.

Damage to any of these can cause long-term pain, dysfunction or loss of sensation.

• Treatment Considerations

Very light pressure is recommended over this site due to the high exposure of the mentioned structures.
