DIABETES MELLITUS

A Condition affecting the endocrine, circulatory and nervous systems.

There are two main types of this metabolic disorder, characterized by a lack of or inadequate secretion of insulin, or altered sensitivity of receptor cells to the presence of insulin:

- Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM)) and,
 

- Type 2 DM (adult onset or non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM)).

• When uncontrolled, symptoms can include

- polyuria (frequent, excessive urination),
- polydipsia (excessive thirst) and,
- hyperglycemia (high blood glucose)

Such clients are at risk of developing loss of vision, infections, and kidney problems and experiencing poor wound healing.
