MENOPAUSE

A condition affecting the genitourinary and endocrine systems.

 

Menopause is the cessation of menstruation or the presence of amenorrhoea for more than 12 months.

 

Commonly occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 years, and is a consequence of a decline in the production of oestrogen by the ovaries.

 

SYMPTOMS OF MENOPAUSE INCLUDE:


• hot flushes
• night sweats
• migraine
• dizziness
• vaginal and skin dryness
• muscular and joint pain
• altered sleep patterns
• depression
• tearfulness
• a loss of confidence and,
• reduced short-term memory

 

Treatment may involve drug intervention such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
