SWEEP TEST (WIPE-BRUSH-BULGE OR STROKE)

TEST POSITIONING

The client lies supine with the involved knee in full extension.

The therapist places both hands on the medial aspect of the patella.

ACTION

The therapist attempts to "milk" or "sweep" any intracapsular swelling by applying pressure to the proximal, distal, and lateral aspects of the patella.

POSITIVE FINDING

Fluid that accumulates on the medial aspect of the patella is representative of intracapsular swelling.

CONSIDERATIONS & COMMENTS

Intracapsular swelling can be present as a result of damage to any internal capsular structure.

The client should maintain muscle relaxation during this test.
