Stockholm was founded in the middle of the 13th century by Birger Jarl, but it wasn't until the 17th century that the city began to play an important role as Sweden's capital. Stockholm is located at the outlet of Mälaren in the Baltic Sea on the border between Uppland and Sörmland.
