Program Title: "Intersectionality of Discrimination: MLK's Legacy and the Disability Rights Movement"

 

Goals:

To educate participants about the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. and his contributions to the civil rights movement.

To explore the intersectionality of discrimination, including how racial and disability discrimination intersect.

To raise awareness about the Disability rights movement and its historical context.

To inspire participants to engage in discussions and actions promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

 

Objectives:

Provide a comprehensive overview of Martin Luther King Jr.'s life, activism, and the civil rights movement.

Highlight the key moments in the Disability rights movement and the leaders who contributed to it.

Examine the connections between racial discrimination and disability discrimination.

Encourage participants to reflect on their own experiences and biases related to discrimination.

Program Schedule:

Welcome and overview of the program's goals and objectives.

 

Martin Luther King Jr.: A Life of Activism (15 minutes)

Presentation on MLK's life, including his early years, leadership in the civil rights movement, and impact on American society.

Discussion Question: How did Martin Luther King Jr.'s work relate to the broader struggle for civil rights and social justice?

 

Intersectionality of Discrimination (15 minutes)

Exploration of the concept of intersectionality, focusing on how multiple forms of discrimination can overlap.

Discussion Question: How can we better understand the experiences of individuals who face discrimination on multiple fronts?

 

The Disability Rights Movement (10 minutes)

Overview of the Disability rights movement, key milestones, and influential figures.
