Did You Know?

Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.

On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared all slaves in Confederate states to be free. However, news of the proclamation did not reach many enslaved people in Texas until more than two years later, on June 19, 1865.

On that day, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all slaves in Texas were now free.

This announcement was met with joy and celebration by the enslaved people who had been waiting for news of their freedom.

The day became known as Juneteenth, a combination of "June" and "nineteenth," and was celebrated by African Americans in Texas and other parts of the country.

The first Juneteenth celebrations took place in Texas in 1866, and the holiday spread throughout the country as African Americans migrated to other states.

Over the years, Juneteenth celebrations have included parades, barbecues, and other community gatherings.

The holiday has served as a time to honor African American culture and achievement, as well as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for racial justice and equality in the United States.

In recent years, Juneteenth has gained greater recognition and significance. In 1980, Texas became the first state to make Juneteenth an official state holiday.

Today, 47 states and the District of Columbia recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday or special day of observance. In 2021, Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday in the United States.
